Horatio Homer is appointed a patrolman in the Boston Police Department.

The first African-American in the Boston Police Department, his walking beat runs from the Museum of Fine Arts to Boston Garden. Homer becomes the first African-American officer in the Boston Police Department when he is promoted to sergeant in 1895, by which time there are four other African-American patrolmen had been hired. Homer retires from the department in 1919.
